Senior Consultant - Board Governance

As a key partner to the VP of Board Governance and Development, you’ll design and lead board education sessions, advise on governance best practices, and facilitate high-impact discussions on board roles/responsibilities, purpose, leadership at the Board level, and Board dynamics. You’ll also contribute to business development and help ensure excellence in every client engagement.

In addition to an annual bonus opportunity and competitive benefits, the salary range for this position is $100,000-150,000 annually.

- Have experience with and understand Governance for a business board of directors; ideally you also understand board Governance for cooperatively structured businesses

- Have the ability to work independently and lead without close supervision
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Board & Peer Evaluations
- Delivers proprietary board self-evaluations and director peer evaluations using software-based surveys and survey reporting, in collaboration with internal staff and clients
- Facilitates boardroom discussions and planning based on board self-evaluation results
- Provides 1:1 developmental feedback for individual directors based on peer evaluation results
- Prepares and submits proposals for assigned board self-evaluation and director peer evaluation projects; works to secure annual renewals of assigned board self-evaluation and director peer evaluation projects, and to secure new projects.
Director Education & Training Programs
- Oversees and coordinates planning and delivery for annual training programs for boards of directors, including:
- Faculty relations and engagement
- Client relations and service
- Program calendar and planning
- Overseeing pre-program operations
- Overseeing and/or conducting pre- and post-program communication with clients and participants
- Production of digital learning components in a Learning Management System
- Overseeing program budgets to ensure profitability
- Providing input on potential efficiencies and opportunities for programming, increased revenue, or cost savings
- Facilitates live director training sessions in various locations as assigned throughout the year; includes:
- Travel to various program locations
- Classroom set up and break down
- Opening and closing each program
- Hospitality and attending to participant needs onsite
- Facilitating speaker relations and needs onsite
- Facilitating group meals and other non-classroom experiences as needed
- Relationship management with venues onsite
- Ensuring a quality learning experience for participants
- Coordinating with FCCS meeting planning staff to ensure smooth logistics
Business Development
- Supports business development efforts with VP for Governance practice.
- Builds positive relationships and reputation with clients and potential clients to secure repeat business and new projects; provides input on possible business opportunities.
- Attends conferences to build relationships and identify potential business opportunities.
- Makes presentations at professional meetings or writes articles, to build visibility for the Governance practice and FCCS.
Financial
- Participates in and contributes to quarterly forecast and annual budget preparation.
- Oversees management of assigned project budgets.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in relevant area. Preferred graduate degree in organizational or leadership development, or law.
- Preferred experience working with boards of directors in one of the following capacities: training, self-evaluation, facilitation of discussions, strategic planning, consulting.
- Preferred understanding of, and experience working with, the role of board members
- Background in leadership development for senior leaders, including design and development of training preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years related work experience.
- Foundational understanding of board governance; preferred experience with corporate board and/or cooperative board governance, and knowledge of cooperative business model.
- Knowledge of the agriculture sector preferred, desire to learn about the agricultural industry required.
- Ability to think strategically for new product/program development.
- Proven skills in group facilitation and public speaking or making presentations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Professional presence and ability to project credibility to senior leaders.
- Demonstrated capability for strategic thinking, and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to build sustainable relationships with clients, prospective clients, colleagues, staff, and management.
- Good judgment about people, process, and strategy.
- Curious, interested in learning, and receptive to feedback.
- Responsive to internal and external clients.
- Excellent personal time management skills and ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment and to be resourceful to solve problems.
- Travel required at 30-50% for meetings and to facilitate programs.
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds for room set up.
